Permanent Makeup, Paramedical Tattoo & Scalp Micropigmentation FAQ

At I Woke Up Like This, we believe informed clients feel more confident booking their services. Below you’ll find answers to common questions about permanent makeup, paramedical tattoo, scalp micropigmentation, healing, aftercare, and more.

What is permanent makeup?
Permanent makeup (PMU) is a cosmetic tattoo procedure that enhances facial features by implanting pigment into the skin. Common treatments include brows, lip blush, and lash enhancement. These services are designed to create soft, natural-looking results that simplify your daily routine.
How long does permanent makeup last?
Permanent makeup is considered semi-permanent. Results typically last 1–3 years, depending on skin type, lifestyle, sun exposure, skincare products, and how well aftercare instructions are followed. Maintenance appointments are usually recommended every 9–24 months.
Does permanent makeup hurt?
Most clients report minimal discomfort during the procedure. A topical numbing product is used throughout the appointment to help keep you comfortable. Sensitivity varies from person to person, but most clients tolerate the procedure very well.
How long does a permanent makeup appointment take?
Most appointments take approximately 2–3 hours, depending on the service. This includes consultation, mapping or design, the procedure itself, and aftercare review.
Will I need a touch-up appointment?
Yes. Permanent makeup is a process, and a touch-up appointment is typically recommended 4–6 weeks after the initial procedure. This appointment is used to perfect the shape, color, and density. Some clients may require additional sessions depending on how their skin retains pigment.
Can permanent makeup look natural?
Yes. Modern permanent makeup is designed to enhance your natural features rather than look harsh or overly saturated. Every treatment at I Woke Up Like This is customized to create results that are soft, balanced, and natural-looking.
What is the difference between microblading and machine brows?
Microblading uses a manual blade to create hair-like strokes, while machine brows use a tattoo device to implant pigment into the skin. Machine techniques often provide more stable healed results and are commonly better suited for oily, mature, or sensitive skin types.
Can I get permanent makeup if I have oily skin?
Yes, although oily skin may heal softer or more powdery than dry skin. Your service will be tailored to your skin type to achieve the best possible healed result.
Will permanent makeup change color over time?
Over time, pigment naturally softens and fades. Proper technique, pigment choice, sun protection, and regular maintenance appointments all help the color fade more evenly and naturally.
Can I get permanent makeup if I already have previous work?
In many cases, yes. However, not all previous permanent makeup can be safely covered or corrected. If you have existing work, please send clear photos before booking so the area can be assessed first.
What if I have old permanent makeup from another artist?
If you have previous work from another artist, an assessment is required before treatment. Depending on the shape, saturation, color, and placement of the existing pigment, a correction, cover-up, or saline lightening session may be recommended first.

Brows FAQ
Why do my brows look so dark right after the procedure?
Immediately after your appointment, the pigment will appear darker and more defined than the final healed result. This is completely normal. As the skin heals, the color will soften significantly.
Why do my brows seem to disappear during healing?
This is a normal part of the healing process. During the ghosting phase, a thin layer of healing skin can temporarily make the pigment appear much lighter or faded. Over the following weeks, the color gradually returns as healing continues.
How long do brow tattoos take to heal?
The initial healing period is usually 7–10 days, but brows take approximately 4 weeks to fully heal and settle in color.
Can I get my brows corrected if I don’t like previous work?
Yes, in many cases corrective work is possible. Depending on the previous tattoo, the area may first need to be lightened before a correction can be performed.

What is lip blush?
Lip blush is a cosmetic tattoo procedure that enhances the natural tone, symmetry, and overall appearance of the lips. It can create a soft wash of color and give the lips a more balanced, defined look.
Does lip blush make your lips look bigger?
Lip blush does not physically add volume, but it can create the appearance of fuller, more defined lips by improving color and border definition.
How long does lip blush last?
Lip blush usually lasts 2–3 years, depending on skin type, lifestyle, sun exposure, and aftercare. Touch-ups and maintenance sessions help keep the color fresh.
Is lip blush painful?
Most clients find lip blush very tolerable. Numbing is used throughout the procedure to help maintain comfort.

What is lash enhancement?
Lash enhancement is a subtle cosmetic tattoo placed along the lash line to create the appearance of fuller, darker lashes. It is softer and more natural-looking than traditional eyeliner.
How long does lash enhancement last?
Lash enhancement typically lasts 1–3 years, depending on skin type, lifestyle, and pigment retention.

What is saline brow lightening?
Saline brow lightening is a non-laser technique used to gently lift and lighten unwanted permanent makeup pigment from the skin. It is often used for brows that are too dark, misshapen, overly saturated, or previously done by another artist.
How does saline lightening work?
A specialized saline solution is implanted into the skin, helping draw pigment toward the surface as the area heals.
How many saline brow lightening sessions will I need?
This depends on the type, depth, and age of the pigment, as well as your skin’s healing response. Multiple sessions are often required.
Can saline lightening fully remove old brows?
Results vary. Saline lightening can significantly soften or lighten unwanted pigment, but complete removal cannot be guaranteed.

What is paramedical tattoo?
Paramedical tattoo is a specialized form of tattooing used to improve the appearance of skin affected by surgery, scarring, hair loss, or medical conditions. These treatments are designed to help restore confidence and create more natural-looking skin tone or detail.
What paramedical tattoo services do you offer?
Paramedical tattoo services may include scar camouflage, stretch mark camouflage, areola restoration, and other restorative tattoo treatments depending on the client’s needs.
What types of scars can be treated with paramedical tattoo?
Paramedical tattoo may help improve the appearance of surgical scars, injury scars, stretch marks, and certain healed scar tissue. Suitability depends on the type, age, texture, and condition of the scar.
Can all scars be camouflaged?
No. Not all scars are suitable candidates. Scars should be fully healed, stable, and typically at least one year old before being considered for treatment.
How many paramedical tattoo sessions are needed?
Most paramedical procedures require more than one session to gradually build color and achieve the most natural result.
Is paramedical tattoo safe?
When performed properly and on suitable healed skin, paramedical tattoo is considered a safe specialized service. A consultation is important to determine candidacy.
How long does paramedical tattoo last?
Results vary depending on the treatment area, skin type, lifestyle, and healing response. In many cases, maintenance may be needed over time.

What is scalp micropigmentation?
Scalp micropigmentation (SMP) is a cosmetic tattoo technique used to create the appearance of fuller hair density or a closely shaved scalp. Tiny pigment impressions are placed in the scalp to mimic natural hair follicles.
Who is scalp micropigmentation for?
SMP may be a good option for clients experiencing thinning hair, receding hairlines, bald areas, alopecia, or scalp scars.
How many scalp micropigmentation sessions are needed?
Most SMP procedures require 2–3 sessions to build density, depth, and a natural finished result.
How long does scalp micropigmentation last?
Scalp micropigmentation is long-lasting, but results may gradually soften over time. Occasional maintenance may be recommended depending on skin type, sun exposure, and lifestyle.
Does scalp micropigmentation look natural?
Yes. When performed properly, SMP is designed to mimic the look of natural hair follicles and create a realistic, subtle result.

What is the healing process like after permanent makeup?
The initial healing process usually takes 7–10 days. During that time, the area may appear darker at first, then dry, flaky, or lighter before settling into the final healed result.
How long does it take for the color to settle?
It takes approximately 4 weeks for pigment to fully settle and reveal the healed result.
Why does permanent makeup fade during healing?
As the skin heals, a fresh layer of skin temporarily covers the pigment. This can make the result look lighter before the color gradually reappears.
Can I wear makeup after my procedure?
Makeup should be avoided on the treated area during the healing period to reduce irritation and support proper healing.
Can I exercise after my appointment?
Heavy sweating, swimming, saunas, and steam should be avoided for 7–10 days after your procedure.
What happens if I pick at the area while it heals?
Picking can remove pigment prematurely, create patchiness, and increase the risk of scarring. Any flaking or scabbing should be left to fall off naturally.
What if my skin doesn’t retain pigment well?
All skin heals differently. Some clients naturally retain pigment better than others, while others may require additional sessions to build the desired result.
Does aftercare really matter?
Yes. Proper aftercare plays a major role in your healed results. Following aftercare instructions helps support better pigment retention and overall healing.

Do I need a consultation before booking?
Consultations are recommended for clients with previous permanent makeup, those interested in paramedical tattoo or scalp micropigmentation, or anyone unsure which service is right for them.
What should I do before my appointment?
Avoid alcohol and caffeine for 24 hours before your procedure. Avoid retinol, strong skincare, and brow tinting or waxing near the treatment area in the days leading up to your appointment. Arrive with the area clean and free of makeup.
Who may not be a good candidate for permanent makeup?
Permanent makeup may not be suitable for clients who are pregnant or breastfeeding, undergoing chemotherapy, have certain skin conditions in the area, have active infections, or are prone to keloid scarring. A consultation can help determine candidacy.
What if I’m nervous about booking?
That’s completely normal. Every appointment is approached with care, clear communication, and a customized plan so you feel comfortable and confident throughout the process.
